PROVIDENCE, RI - Outscored by 16 points in the second half, the Iona College women's basketball team fell 70-58 to Providence College Wednesday afternoon, dropping Iona to 2-4 in the early season.
The Friars came out strong, taking an 11-4 lead with 15:40 remaining in the first on a jumper by Symone Roberts. The Gaels would answer back with a 12-4 run, capped off by a jumper from junior guard Shonice Hawkins with 10:57 on the clock, giving Iona its first lead at 16-15.
After taking the lead, Iona would continue its hot shooting and extend its cushion to eight, 27-19, after a three pointer by freshman guard Aaliyah Robinson.
Iona would carry a lead for the rest of the half, but allowed Providence one last basket, after Brianna Edwards knocked down a layup as time expired, cutting the Iona lead to four, 36-32, as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
In the first, Iona connected on 16 of 34 attempts, shooting at a 47.1% clip in the first 20 minutes of play. The Friars shot 14-for-37 from the field, connecting at 37.8%.
In the second half, the Friars scored the first four points of the stanza, knotting the game at 36 on the second of two free throws by Roberts with 18:40 remaining.
The Friars and Gaels would trade leads and ties over the next several minutes, before Providence took the lead for good on a layup by Chanise Baldwin with 8:05 remaining put the home team ahead 56-54.
A jumper by sophomore guard Damika Martinez with 8:56 would be the last field goal Iona would connect on for the next eight minutes and twenty seconds of play until another Martinez bucket with 36 seconds remaining, as Providence would end the game on a 14-4 run, with Iona's only other two points coming from the line.
Martinez picked up her first career double-double in the contest, finishing with 19 points and pulling down 10 boards. Freshman forward Joy Adams finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Tori Rule was one of three Friars in double digits, scoring a career high 23 points.
Iona looks to get back in the win column Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Staten Island, NY for a 4:00 pm matchup with Wagner.
