EDISON, NJ - Iona College men's basketball senior guard Lamont Jones and freshman guard A.J. English were both recognized this week by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for their efforts in the Gaels' hard fought 81-78 overtime win at Georgia Saturday night.  Jones earned his third career MAAC Player of the Week honors, and second of the season.  English was named MAAC Rookie of the Week for the first time, and became the first Iona rookie to earn the honor since Sean Armand in 2011.  It is believed to be the first time Iona has claimed both weekly awards.

Jones scored 25 points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds  at Georgia Saturday. He led the Gaels to their first SEC win in 27 years by scoring 11 points in the second half and five more in the overtime period. During a critical stretch in the second half, Jones scored seven straight points for the Maroon & Gold to help Iona erase its largest deficit of the contest. He also assisted on the eventual game-winning three-pointer, finding teammate Curtis Dennis in the corner on his drive to the basket with less than 20 seconds remaining in the contest. Jones ranks No. 1 in the MAAC in scoring and No. 6 in the NCAA.

English had a breakout effort in his first collegiate start, scoring a career-high 17 points in the win at Georgia. English scored 11 of his 17 in the first half and knocked down a season-best four three-point field goals in the win. English's defining sequence in the game came on a three-pointer with 3:10 to play that cut a Georgia lead to one-point. After missing his first attempt from the wing and an offensive rebound by Shawn Jackson, English had the guts to take a second attempt from the same spot and calmly buried one of the key buckets in the game. English also buried a three-pointer on Iona's first possession in overtime and gave his team a two-point advantage in the extra frame.

The Gaels return home for their second contest in a four-game, eight day stretch when they host Liberty at the Hynes Center on Tuesday (Dec. 18) at 7:00 pm.
