Iona College men's basketball freshman A.J. English earned his third MAAC Rookie of the Week honor for his performance in Iona's 3-0 week.
English’s third award of the season is the most among MAAC Rookies. Fairfield freshman Marcus Gilbert has earned two Rookie of the Week honors. His teammate Josip Mikulic, Loyola’s Tyler Hubbard, Manhattan’s RaShawn Stores, and Niagara’s T.J. Cline account for the other four awards this season.
English averaged 9.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists in Iona’s 3-0 week. English shot 52.6% (10-for-19) from the field and 63.6% (7-for-11) from the three point line.
He scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds in wins at St. Bonaventure and Siena.
The 11 points vs. the Bonnies came in 17 minutes playing time.
Against the Saints, his three-pointer with 9:40 remaining vs. the Saints sparked a 14-2 run for that erased Iona’s 10-point second half deficit. English also recorded his first two collegiate blocks. On Sunday vs. Manhattan, He hit two more key trifectas, one at the 15:49 mark that cut the Jaspers’ lead to one point and a second at the 9:03 mark that put Iona ahead by four points.
English ranks fifth on the team in scoring averaging 7.6 points per game. He's drained 25 three pointers and his 42.4% conversion rate from beyond the arc is just .3 behind team leader Sean Armand.
