NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team shot just 36.9% from the field, including 21.7% from the arc, and fell 60-54 to Fairfield Friday evening at the Hynes Center, dropping the Gaels' record to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in MAAC play.
Fairfield got out to an early 5-0 lead on a layup by Katie Cizynski with 17:20 remaining. Iona answered back, scoring 13 of the next 15 points to take a 13-7 lead when sophomore guard Aleesha Powell put home a layup with 11:07 remaining in the first half.
A jumper by Cizynski knotted the game at 13, as Fairfield would then tack on five more points and held an 18-13 lead when Felicia DaCruz knocked down a jumper in the paint with 6:39 remaining in the period.
Fairfield took its largest lead of the half, 27-19, with 1:23 remaining on a layup by Christelle Akon-Akech. Iona fought back, cutting the lead to three, 27-24, thanks to a trifeca by senior guard Diana Hubbard with 1:03 left in the half. Brittany Obi-Tabot would score the half's final four points for the Stags as Fairfield held a 31-26 lead at half.
Fairfield would continue to hold the lead in the second, as a three pointer by Alexys Vasquez gave the Stags a 46-36 lead with 10:32 on the clock. Iona would counter with a run of its own, and cut the deficit to one, 48-47, on a layup by sophomore guard Damika Martinez with 4:34 remaining.
Fairfield would halt the run and put the game out of reach with a 6-0 run over the next 2:09 of play, taking a 54-47 advantage on a layup by Cizynski with 2:25 remaining.
Down the stretch, the Stags sealed the victory from the line, converting six out of eight opportunities from the charity stripe over the final 34 seconds of play.
Freshman forward Joy Adams led the Gaels with 12 points, and pulled down a team high nine rebounds. Powell finished with 11 points, four assists and five steals while Martinez had 10 points and seven rebounds. Obi-Tabot scored a game high 18 points for Fairfield, while Cizynski finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Iona looks to halt its two game slide when it hosts Saint Peter's at 2:00 pm.
