NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Trailing into the final race of the day, the Iona College men’s swimming and diving team got a big win in the 400-free to give the Gaels a 123-114 victory over Fairfield on Senior Day at the Hynes Athletics Center Pool.
“I’m really proud of the team today,” said head coach Nick Cavataro.
The foursome of senior Joseph De Leone, juniors Justin Grigull (anchor) and Lee Stiles and freshman Scott Martin won the race in 3:16.21.
In the other team relay, the 400-medley, the Gaels also took first as senior Chris Yacobacci, junior Ryan Bacci and freshman Thomas Keefe and Brandon Hadhazy squeaked by Fairfield in 3:38.38.
Martin won the 1,000-free in 10:10.19 and Grigull took the 200-free in 1:45.02. De Leone took second in the 200-free, finishing two seconds behind Grigull.
Yacobacci added to his win totals on the year, taking the 200-IM in 1:57.77 and the 200-fly in 2:08.06. Giovine placed second at 2:13.47.
Junior Nick Kotonias and freshman Daniel McGovern placed second and third in the 200-fly as did junior Tyler Elfert and Stiles in the 100-free.
Grigull added more points to the Gaels win as he took the 500-free defeating Martin by seven seconds at 4:50.37.
The Gaels will return to the Hynes Athletics Center on Monday for a meet with Manhattan at 6 p.m.
