BOSTON, MA - Iona College men's indoor track graduate student Matthew Gillespie became the third athlete in school history to run a sub-four minute mile with his 3:58.55 effort at the 2013 Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University. Gillespie led six Gaels in the meet.
Gillespie was first overall in his heat winning by nearly three and a half seconds. His time was the fifth fastest among the 15 sections and 174 competitors in the event. All four competitors to finish ahead of him competed in the "elite" section. He was the second collegiate finisher, .44 seconds behind Northeastern's Eric Jenkins. Professional competitor Galen Rupp from Nike Oregon Project was the race winner, finishing with a meet record 3:50.92.
Gillespie joins teammate Mitch Goose and former Gael standout Richard Kiplagat as Iona runners to finish the mile in less than four minutes. Kiplagat is the school record holder at 3:57.40 during the 2006 Gotham Cup. Goose posted a 3:59.26 at the 2012 MAAC Championships. The fourth fastest mile in school history belongs to Tim Bayley, a 4:00.24 at the 2007 Husky Classic.
Sophomore Otis Ubriaco also competed in the mile event and ran a personal best 4:07.49. He was third in his heat and 17th overall.
Grad student Daniel Clorley was fifth overall in the 3,000-meter event in 8:07.57 competing in the top section of the meet. Senior Chris Stogsdill was 19th overall (8:18.23, eighth in section two) while sophomore Jake Byrne was 20th (8:18.76, 12th in section one) in the 3k event.
Sophomore Michael O'Dowd competed in the 5,000-meter run. He was 18th overall (14:51.91) in both the overall standings and the top section of the race.
