LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team committed 26 turnovers, its second highest total of the season, which led to 26 points for their opponents from Siena College as the Saints dealt the Gaels a 70-54 loss Thursday evening at Alumni Recreation Center.
With 17:21 remaining in the first, a three pointer by sophomore guard Damika Martinez gave Iona an early 5-3 cushion, and its final lead of the game. Siena would respond quickly with an 8-0 run, taking an 11-5 lead on a three-pointer by Clara Sole Anglada.
Iona cut the margin to four, 18-14, on a trifecta by freshman forward Cassidee Ranger with 10:51 left in the half before a 6-0 run by the home squad gave the Saints their first double digit lead, 24-14, with 7:48 remaining in the period.
The Gaels would continue to fight back, cutting the margin to four, 26-22 on a jumper by Diana Hubbard with 4:42 in the left. The jumper marked the final points of the half for Iona, as Siena closed the first on a 7-0 run, as Kanika Cummings' layup with 1:06 remaining gave the Saints a 33-22 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, Iona continued to struggle to find the bucket as Siena opened up the period with another 7-0 run. When sophomore guard Aleesha Powell knocked down a three-pointer with 14:47 remaining, Siena had already pulled away 40-25.
The Gaels would not be able to get themselves out of the the double digit deficit, getting as close as 10 on a jumper by Martinez before Siena responded with a 4-0 run to halt any chance at an Iona comeback.
A free throw by Symone Kelly with 3:08 remaining pushed the Siena lead to a game high 20 points as the Saints moved to 4-5 in conference play. Iona nows stands at 10-10 overall, and 5-4 in MAAC action.
Iona was led by freshman Joy Adams and Powell, who each scored 11 points. Lily Grenci led a trio of Saints in double figures, finishing with a game high 16 points. Tehresa Coles had 12 points and nine rebounds while Sole Anglada chipped in 11 points.
The Gaels look to snap their two game losing streak Sunday afternoon, when they visit Fairfield for a 2:00 pm tip.
