Softball Picked Fifth In Preseason MAAC Poll

EDISON, NJ - The three time defending MAAC Champion Iona College softball team was picked fifth in the annual preseason coaches poll, it was announced today.  Fairfield was named the preseason favorite.

Additionally, senior outfielders Eileen McCann and Jodi Petersen were named to the Preseason All-MAAC team.  Shannon Jones of Siena was named MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.

The Stags finished with 72 points in the poll, while Marist finished second (69).  Canisius and Siena tied for third place with 61 points apiece.  The Gaels took fifth place (41), followed by Niagara (33), Manhattan (31), Rider (24) and Saint Peter's (13).

McCann led the Gaels with a .331 batting average a season ago, while ranking second on the squad with seven home runs.  McCann led the team lead with 28 runs scored and drove in 16 runs.  A season ago, McCann became Iona's all-time leader in home runs, with the record now standing at 25 long balls.

Petersen hit .290 over a team leading 207 at-bats in 2012, scoring 26 runs, driving in 19 more and led the Gaels with 15 stolen bases.  Petersen is Iona's all-time leader in at-bats and enters her final season with the Gaels in the top-10 in runs, hits, runs batted in and steals.

Iona begins its 2013 campaign Saturday, Feb. 8 against Detroit in its first of five matchups at the UNC Wimington Beach Blast.
