FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona College women's basketball team connected on 52.2% of its shots from the field and led for all but the first 35 seconds of the game, pulling out a 62-47 win over Fairfield Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
Sophomore guard Damika Martinez scored 21 points, dished out three assists and grabbed six rebounds for the Gaels Freshman forward Joy Adams collected her eighth double-double of the season, scoring 18 points on 8-10 shooting from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Aleesha Powell scored 12 second half points while redshirt junior guard Haley D'Angelo notched career highs in scoring with nine points and rebounding with six boards.
After a layup by Fairfield's Katie Cyzinski opened the game's scoring, Iona countered with a 9-0 run, with three points each from D'Angelo, Adams and Martinez.
After the Stags cut the lead to three, 9-6, with 14:23 left in the half, the Gaels went on a 18-2 run, with a layup by D'Angelo with 8:24 left in the first giving Iona a 27-8 lead.
With Iona ahead 30-11 after a layup by Martinez, Fairfield cut into the Iona lead in the final five minutes of the period. A three-pointer by Cyzinksi with 31 seconds remaining cut the Iona cushion to 11, 34-23, at the half.
Iona opened the second with the first four points of the half, taking a 38-23 lead on a jumper by Powell with 16:30 remaining.
With the Gaels ahead 40-25, Fairfield went on an 11-5 run to cut the lead to nine, 45-36, on a layup by Brittany MacFarlane with 7:30 left on the clock. Iona would answer by scoring the game's next nine points, taking a commanding 18 point lead on a pair of free throws by Martinez with 4:08 remaining.
Martinez would knock down another pair of free throws with 48 seconds remaining to give Iona a 62-44 lead that helped complete the victory for Iona.
The Gaels connected on more than half of their shots from the field for the second time this season in a contest in which they outrebounded their opposition 37-27.
Iona is back in action Thursday, when they welcome first place Marist to the Hynes Center for a 4:30 pm tip.
