NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Marist erased a 12-point second half lead and needed a 65-foot buzzer beater to extend the game in order to outlast the Iona College men's basketball team 105-104 in double overtime.
Marist (6-18, 3-10 MAAC) sophomore Chavaughn Lewis took an inbound pass with 2.5 seconds left in the first extra frame and floated the long range dagger to knot the score at 94-94.
The second overtime featured possibly an even wilder ending. Down by three points senior Lamont Jones stepped back for a long two pointer to cut the deficit to 105-104 with 3.2 seconds to go in the game. After a long review, several replay angles confirmed Jones hit the shot with a foot on the three-point line. The Gaels still trailed by one point.
On the ensuing inbounds, Marist junior Jay Bowie was whistled for a player control foul, turning the ball over and giving the Gaels a crack at a game winning attempt. Iona junior Sean Armand's three-pointer from the corner was short but the ball was knocked out of bounds with 0.1 seconds remaining. With only a tip attempt able to save the game, sophomore Tavon Sledge got a hand on the ball but couldn't find the net as the Maroon & Gold was handed the devastating loss.
It was Iona's (14-10, 8-5 MAAC) fourth MAAC loss this season decided in the game's final possession.
Jones led the Gaels with 37 points. He shot 12-of-25 from the field and 10-of-13 from the free throw line with three three-point field goals. Armand had 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in his second double-double of the season. Senior Taaj Ridley also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Tre Bowman had 18 points and five rebounds. Sophomore David Laury had his seventh straight game with 10 or more rebounds with 13 in the loss.
Marist was led by junior Adam Kemp's 29-point, 16 rebound, and seven-block effort. Lewis posted a gaudy 21 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Sophomore Isaiah Morton recorded 18 points and nine assists.
The Red Foxes narrowly outshot the Gaels, 44.0%-44.3% while remarkably both teams shot an identical 11-for-26 from beyond the arc. Iona held the edge on the boards 53-48 while Marist held a 26-22 assist advantage.
Iona looks to snap a season-long three-game losing streak Saturday night when they host Rider at 7:00 pm in game that can be seen nationwide on ESPN3.
