Martinez's 31 Leads WBB To 88-58 Win Over Rider
Release: Saturday 02/09/2013
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Sophomore guard Damika Martinez scored 31 points and was one of three players in double figures as the Iona College women's basketball team set aside Rider 88-58 Saturday afternoon at the Hynes Center.

Martinez had a balanced all around game for the Gaels, pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out seven assists in the win.  Freshman forward Joy Adams picked up her ninth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.  Junior center Sabrina Jeridore contributed a career high 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and registered four blocks.

The Iona offense was slow to ignite as the Gaels were held off the scoreboard for almost the first three minutes to play before Martinez knocked down a jumper with 17:02 remaining in the first.

The Gaels would score the next eight points of the game, as Iona took a 10-2 lead on a fast break layup by Adams with 14:12 left in the period.  The Gaels would not reign in their red hot shooting, as Iona took a 17-6 lead on a layup by Martinez with 12:26 remainining in the first.

With the Gaels ahead 29-6 with 8:29 remaining in the first, the two squads traded baskets before a three pointer by senior guard Diana Hubbard gave Iona a 46-15 lead with 3:02 left in the half.  Rider would outscore Iona 5-3 over the remainder of the half, but still found itself trailing 49-20 at halftime.

Rider would come out for the second half with a plan to get the offense going inside, as forward Cailtin Bopp scored eight early points in the period, and helped the Broncs trimmed the lead to 24, 57-33, with 15:35 remaining in the contest.

Adams would score the next six points of the game, as Iona strengthened its hold on the lead, 63-33, with 13:12 remaining.  With the outcome settled by that point, the Gaels were able to take a game high lead of 32 points, 79-47, on a jumper by freshman Jordan Henry with 6:37 left in the game before matching it on a layup by Jeridore with 6:17 remaining.

Martinez fell just three points shy of her career high of 34 points, set a year ago at Rider, while connecting on 14 of her 19 attempts from the field.  Bopp led Rider with 18 points while MyNeshia McKenzie scored 14 points.

Iona is back in action Thursday, when they visit Jersey City for a 7:00 pm matchup with Saint Peter's.
