NEW ROCHELLE, NY - In its home finale of the 2012-13 season, the Iona College women's basketball team did not disappoint, defeating Siena 71-47 Sunday afternoon at the Hynes Center.
Early on, the Gaels and Saints traded baskets, with the game tied at eight at the first media timeout of the contest. Coming out of the timeout, Iona would go on a 21-5 run, taking a 29-13 lead on a three pointer by sophomore guard Aleesha Powell with 5:47 reamining in the first.
The Gaels would only score three points the rest of the half, as the defense held the Saints to just 17 points in the period, taking a 15 point cushion, 32-17, into the locker room.
In the first half, Iona held Siena to just 25.8% shooting from the field, while connecting on 41.2% of its own shots.
After Powell opened the second half with a layup, the Saints would climb back into the game with an 11-0 run, trimming the Iona lead to six, 34-28, on a three pointer by Ida Krogh with 14:39 remaining in the half.
A free throw by Symone Kelly with 12:48 cut the Iona lead to four, 36-32, before Iona put the game out of reach with a 16-0 run, sparked by eight points by sophomore guard Damika Martinez and capped by a pair of free throws by Powell with 8:20 remaining.
Martinez would knock down her fourth three pointer of the game with 2:28 left to give the Gaels their largest lead of the game, 69-42. Iona would then connect on its final field goal of the game in touching fashion, as senior guard Diana Hubbard dropped in a layup with 42 seconds remaining in the final home game of her career.
Freshman forward Joy Adams led the Gaels with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Martinez also connected for 16 points. Powell filled out the statsheet, scoring 15 points and grabbing six rebounds to go along with six steals and seven assists. Hubbard scored 10 points and had three steals in the contest.
Iona, still locked in a second place tie in the MAAC, next travels to Manhattan Thursday for a 7:00 pm tip.
