POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Iona College women’s water polo team (3-4) dropped the first of two weekend matches at the Marist Invite 16-8 to No. 18 Hartwick College Saturday afternoon at McCann Natatorium.
Holding Hartwick to a single goal in the opening four minutes, the Gaels lead 4-2 at the end of the first period. But four unanswered Hartwick goals found Iona down 6-4 with 2:47 left to halftime. The Gaels responded with two straight scores, but Hartwick still led 7-5 at the break.
Frustrated by Hartwick’s aggressive defense and counter offense, Iona managed only two third-period scores, while Hartwick hit four consecutive goals for a 12-7 lead going into the final period. That pattern continued in the four quarter with Hartwick outscoring the Gaels 4-1 for the win.
Juniors Erika Lauraitis and Georgina Lee and senior Alyssa Turza led Iona with two goals apiece. Junior Sarah Hanly and sophomore Katie Stelnicki added one each while junior Amy Olsen had two assists and three steals. Junior goalkeeper Marisa Gaynor made 11 saves.
Iona defeated DDO later in the afternon in an exhibition match, and next battles Notre Dame College tomorrow at 9:15 am.
