Eugene Marshall, Jr. has announced that he will step down as Director of Athletics at Iona College effective June 1, 2013.

"I am extremely proud to have served as athletic director at Iona College," said Marshall. "The coaches, administrators and student-athletes will always hold a special place in my heart. My resignation was a tough decision to make, but one that I needed to make for my family."

"We thank Gene for his work here and wish him the best in his future endeavors," said President Joseph E. Nyre, Ph.D. "Athletics is a significant piece of Iona’s heritage. Our student-athletes play an important role in the College community, so we will begin a national search for our next athletics director immediately."

While Iona’s search takes place, a transition team will be assisted by Mr. Marshall and led by Senior Vice President for Advancement and External Affairs Paul J. Sutera and Senior Associate Athletics Director Matt Glovaski. Glovaski, who joined the College in 2006, is also head coach of Iona’s golf team. Sutera is an experienced athletics administrator as a former associate athletics director at Rice University.

"We’ll be looking to elevate athletics and opportunities for our student-athletes at Iona," Sutera said. "With the largest-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign in Iona’s history moving forward, athletics has a significant role in both enhancing resources and benefitting from them. The campaign will support of student, faculty and athletic excellence in our pursuit of national prominence in higher education. The new athletics director will play a key role in helping us realize those goals."

Iona has begun working with Parker Executive Search, an Atlanta-based firm well known for recruiting senior athletics executives. Marshall notes that the Iona search will be "swift but thorough."

Founded in 1940, Iona College is a four-year private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers and American Catholic higher education. It is a diverse community of learners and scholars dedicated to academic excellence and the values of justice, peace and service.
