REDLANDS, CA – In the first of two Saturday matches at the Lancer Invite, the Iona women’s water polo team won its third consecutive game with a 13-10 victory over the University of Redlands at the Thompson Aquatic Center as seven Gaels scored goals.

With the Gaels (8-5) leading 9-7 going into the final period, the Bulldogs (6-9) pulled with one 9-8 with 7:19 left in regulation.   In the next five minutes, Iona outscored the home team 4-1, including two goals from junior Erika Lauraitis, to seal the win.

Scoring 15 goals in the past five games on the team’s Spring Break trip, Lauraitis led Iona with four goals.   Defensively, she recorded a steal and a block, despite sitting out nearly eight minutes with two ejections.  Co-captains junior Amy Olsen added three goals, and senior Alyssa Turza had two.   On the Southern California road trip, Olsen leads Iona with 19 goals, and Turz also has 15.

On defense, Olsen had two steals and drew four opponent kickouts, including a five-meter penalty.  Iona was two-for-two on a five-meter penalty shots with Olsen and Lauraitis scoring.

Junior Sarah Hanly, junior Georgina Lee, freshman Taylor Silva and freshman Meghan Mahoney had one goal each.   Lee also assisted on two Iona scores.  Junior goalie Marisa Gaynor recorded 12 saves in the win.

Lauraitis put Iona on the board with 6:33 left in the first period, but Redlands tied the game at one 27 seconds later.  The home team then hit two more unanswered goals for a 3-1 advantage at the 3:19 mark.  Twenty-two seconds later, Lauraitis’ second goal pulled Iona within one 3-2.

In the second period, the Gaels answered with their own 3-0 run for a 5-3 lead with 4:42 to intermission.   The Bulldogs outscored the Gaels 2-1 in the closing two minutes, however, to narrow Iona’s lead to 6-5 at halftime.

Despite Redland’s two third-period scores and pesky defense, Iona hit three goals to hold the lead 9-7 going into the final period.

The victory gives Iona four wins and one loss on the team’s Spring Break road trip in Southern California.   The Gaels wraps up their four-match Lancer Invite against Macalester today at 7:00 pm EST.
