REDLANDS, CA – Notching its fifth straight road win on the annual Spring Break trip through Southern California, the Iona College women’s water polo team defeated Macalester College 16-4 Saturday afternoon in the team’s final Lancer Invite match at the University of Redlands’ Thompson Aquatic Center.

Junior Erika Lauraitis put the Gaels (9-4) on the board in the opening minutes, as Iona mounted a 5-1 lead by the end of the first half.   Resting his starters and other key players, head coach Brian Kelly challenged his sophomores and freshmen to run the Iona offensive, while using multiple goalies.   They responded with four second-period goals to give Iona a 9-3 halftime advantage.    Iona scored six goals in the third, and one in the fourth for the win.

Sophomore Ashley DeMarzo and freshman Cassidy O’Connell led Iona with three goals each.  Lauraitis, junior Marisa Gaynor (playing the field), freshmen Sara Bortz and Emma Martinus scored two goals each.  Junior Georgina Lee and freshman Dana Andrea each scored one goal.

With five wins and one exhibition loss on its Southern California trip, Iona heads north to Santa Barbara for two Sunday games in the Gaucho Invitational against CSU Bakersfield at 2:40 pm EST, and UC Santa Barbara at 6:45 pm EST.
