RIVERSIDE, CA - The Iona College softball team continued play at the UC Riverside Highlander Classic Saturday afternoon with a pair of losses.  In the opener, Iona fell to Notre Dame 12-4 in six innings before dropping an 11-3 decision to Northern Illinois in five.

In the opener, the Irish scored three runs in the first, scoring on a pair of Iona errors and a double by Katey Haus.

Iona would trim the deficit to one in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs.  Sophomore Allison Hand began the rally with a one-out walk before senior Beth Kann singled to left.  Freshman Christine Costello sacrificed the duo to second and third, before junior Katie Jansson doubled to right field to plate two runs.

Notre Dame responded with three runs in bottom of the inning, on a lead off home run by Laura Winter, an RBI double by Haus and a run scoring fielder's choice by Chloe Saganowich.

The Gaels, now trailing by four, once against got within striking distance with two runs in the top of the fifth.  Costello picked up the big knock of the frame, driving in Hand and Kann with a double to center to get Iona within two, 6-4.

Notre Dame once again answered Iona's inning, putting five runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 11-4. The Irish would then secure the run rule with a run in the sixth inning to claim the 12-4 victory.

Brittany O'Donnell got the win for Notre Dame, allowing two runs and three hits in 3.1 innings of relief.  Freshman Jordan Courage was handed the loss for Iona, allowing ten runs, nine earned, in 4.1 innings.

Against Northern Illinois, Iona was in a deep hole early, courtesy of an eight run inning by the Huskies, by way of eight hits and one Iona error.

Northern Illinois put the margin into double digits, going ahead 11-0 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on an Iona error and another on a single by Jillian Mattor.

Iona would scrap together three runs in the top of the fifth, scoring a run on an RBI groundout by Costello and two on a Northern Illinois error.  The eight run deficit, however, would keep the game from continuing.

Costello took the loss for Iona, allowing seven runs and seven hits in 1.1 innings.  Jessica Sturm got the win for the Huskies, allowing one earned run in five innings.

Iona wraps up the West Coast trip Sunday at 12:00 pm EST, when the Gaels take on UC Riverside.
