WBB Matches Up With Drexel In WNIT First Round
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - For the fourth time in program history, and first since the 2009-10 season, the Iona College women's basketball will compete in postseason basketball. Late Monday evening, the Gaels found out they have drawn Drexel of the Colonial Athletic Association in the first round of the 2013 Women's NIT. The two teams will square off at the Dragons' Daskalakis Athletic Center Thursday evening at a time to be announced early Tuesday.
The Gaels, with their record of 20-12, earned an automatic bid as the highest team in the MAAC regular season standings to not advance to the NCAA Tournament and are the lone representative of the MAAC in the field. Drexel was one of three CAA teams to earn an invitation to the Tournament, along with James Madison and Old Dominion.
All-CAA First Team selection Hollie Mershon leads the Dragons, who earned their fourth straight Women's NIT selection, averaging a team 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists per outing. Senior forward Taylor Wootton was named Third Team All-CAA and is averaging 11.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
It will be the ninth all-time matchup between the two schools, with Iona holding a 5-3 advantage in the series, and the first since the 1995-96 campaign. In five all-time Women's NIT games, Iona holds a record of 2-3 as the Gaels picked up first round wins in both the 2007 and 2008 Tournaments.
