NEW ROCHELLE, NY – A pair of hat tricks were not enough to propel the Iona College lacrosse team, as the team fell to Saint Bonaventure, 14-9 on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
Senior Kylie Gregory and freshman Mary Kate McCormick scored a combined six goals to lead the Iona offense. Junior Jenna Stone and sophomores Bernadette Gennaro and Casey Palmer also tallied for the Gaels.
Jenna Schlagenhauf and Erin Thomas scored three goals each for the Bonnies in the win. Karly Kocis made seven saves in the win.
Iona scored the first two goals of the game, but a 7-0 run by the Bonnies daunted the Iona offense midway through the first half. Iona answered with two late goals in the period to cut the deficit to three at the half. The Bonnies held a 15-9 advantage in shots, while also maintaining a 6-3 edge in grounds balls.
The Gaels started the second half scoring two quick goals by Gregory, but St. Bonaventure quickly responded.
Trailing 11-8, the visitors used a four corners play to slow down the game, but an offensive foul was called allowing Gennaro the opportunity to score cutting the deficit to 11-9 and reulting in the ejection of St. Bonaventure head coach Ryan Lynn. The Bonnies thne rattled off three more insurance goals to hold the five goal differential.
Iona will head to New Hampshire for a meeting on Wednesday and then a weekend meeting with MAAC foe Canisius.
