HEMPSTEAD, NY - The Iona College softball team dropped a late inning lead and dropped a weekday non-conference matchup with Hofstra, 4-1, Tuesday afternoon at Hofstra Softball Stadium.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Gaels broke up a scoreless tie. With one out, freshman Sydney Dimon walked before sophomore Allison Hand drove in her team leading 13th run of the season with a run scoring double.
Iona's lead would be short lived as the Pride would overtake the Gaels with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Hofstra would put two runners on with singles by Tori Rocha and Tessa Ziemba before Erin Trippi delivered the big blow of the contest, connecting on a three run home run to put Hofstra ahead 3-1. Maggie Hawkins would then add some insurance with a solo home run.
In the seventh inning, Iona would mount a comeback as senior Beth Kann reached on a Seton Hall error before sophomore Carly Argyle got on with a single. Hofstra starter Olivia Galati would then retire the next three batters to secure the victory for the Pride.
Freshman Jordan Courage (1-5) took the loss in relief for Iona, allowing three earned runs in 0.2 innings of work. Galati picked up her 14th win of the season, scattering four hits over seven innings to go along with 12 strikeouts.
Iona will continue its non-conference schedule Wednesday afternoon, when it welcomes Fordham to Rice Oval in the team's home opener at 3:00 pm.
