NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team was unable to come from behind after giving up an early lead to Fordham Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Rams 3-2 in the team's home opener at Rice Oval.
Fordham would put across two runs in the first, aided by three Iona miscues. Jamie LaBovick led off the game with a double to left and moved to third on an error. Elise Fortier then drew a walk to put runners at first and third. Fortier followed by stealing second with LaBovick scoring on an overthrow. Fordham's starting pitcher Michele Daubman would later help her with own cause, plating Fortier with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Gaels would crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, junior Katie Jansson sinlged to centerfield. After a groundout moved Jansson to second, freshman Sarah Schutz singled to left to put runners on the corners before freshman Sydney Dimon plated Jansson with a single of her own to left field.
Fordham would regain the two run advantage in the top of the third. Fortier tripled to right field and scored on an RBI groundout to to short by Gabby Luety.
The score remained at 3-1 until the bottom of the seventh, when Iona trimmed the deficit to one on a one-out RBI fielder's choice by Jodi Petersen, scoring Dimon from third. It would as close as the Gaels would get as retired the next batter to complete the victory for the road squad.
Daubman moved to 8-4 with the win, allowing six hits and two earned runs in seven innings. Sophomore Carly Argyle fell to 3-10 on the year with the tough luck loss, allowing thee runs, one earned, over her seven innings of work.
Iona is back in action Saturday, when its host Fairfield at 12:00 pm in its first conference doubleheader of the season.
