NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona College volleyball head coach Jon Killingbeck announced the addition of three student-athletes for the 2013 campaign. Karly White, Meghan Nelson and Kate Brodnax will become a part of Gael Nation this fall.
"I'm excited for the three student-athletes to join us in August," said Killingbeck. "Overall they will help strengthen our team that's returning 13 players for the upcoming season."
Karly White is a 5-11 middle blocker from Bay Shore HS on Long Island. At Bay Shore, White set the single-season record for both kills (231) and solo blocks (65). She also took home the Starting Six Award given to the top six players in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
"Karly brings an athletic ability that fits really well into our style of play," said Killingbeck. "She does a great job of hitting at the peak of her jump and has a work ethic that will help her become a strong player for years to come."
Meghan Nelson is 5-11 outside hitter from East Hampton, CT. Nelson played scholastically at Mercy HS in Middletown, CT and played club volleyball for the CT Impact. Her awards include: First Team All-State, CHSCA All-Star, and All-Conference. Nelson holds her school record for aces.
"We are excited to have Meghan in the program for the next four years," said Killingbeck. "When healthy, she has the ability to be a tremendous scorer at the pin. We saw it in high school when she averaged over four kills per set."
Kate Brodnax is a 5-11 setter from Austin, TX. Scholastically, Brodnax played for Austin HS and played club for Austin Juniors. She was named Texas 15-5 Most Valuable Setter in 2012, AISD All-Tournament Team in 2011 and 2012 and was listed on the Under Armour Player to Watch list.
"Kate is a tall and strong blocking setter but the thing that most impressed me is her pin location when she sets," said Killingbeck. "She does a great job of putting her hitters in a great position to make plays and has a natural, confident leadership that comes out when she is on the court."
The Gaels open the 2013 campaign in Malibu, CA for a three-game tournament at Pepperdine University. The Gaels take on the host Waves, the Big Ten's Wisconsin and perennial CAA leader Delaware on Aug. 30 and 31.
