NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Six members of the Iona College men's outdoor track squad qualified for and will compete at the 2013 NCAA Championships East Preliminary Round at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, NC this weekend.
Senior Mitch Goose is the top ranked performer for the Gaels and will compete in the 5,000-meter semifinal on Saturday (May 25) at 8:45 pm. His time of 13:40.11 at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford University on Apr. 28 was the seventh fastest of all performers on the East Coast.
Three of Goose's teammates also qualified in the 5k event. Junior Daniel Clorley ran the second fastest 5k for the Gaels this spring and 29th best in the East. His time of 14:03.98 at the Stanford Invitational on Mar. 29 earned him the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Preliminary round. Junior Matthew Gillespie qualified with a 14:10.21 (38th in East) at the Virginia Challenge on May 10 while rookie Kieran Clements earned a spot with a 14:11.44 (40th in East) at the Penn Relays on Apr. 25.
Joining the quartet of 5k harriers will be senior Matt Bayley in the 3,000-meter steeple chase quarterfinal and sophomore Andrew Kowalsky in the 10,000-meter semifinal events.
Bayley ran the 15th fastest 3k steeple chase time in the East with his 8:53.61 and fifth place performance at the IC4A Championships on May 10. The quarterfinal round is slated for Friday (May 24) at 9:30 pm.
Kowalsky ran a personal best time of 29:35.04 at the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton University on Apr. 6. It was the 25th fastest time in the East this year and 13th fastest time in school history. The 10k semifinal commences Thursday (May 23) at 9:40 pm.
The six harriers compete for the right to advance to the 2013 NCAA Championships at the University of Oregon from Jun. 5-8.
