GREENSBORO, NC - Iona College men's outdoor track graduate student Mitch Goose advanced to the NCAA Championship final in the 5,000-meter run at the East Preliminary event at North Carolina A&T. Three of Goose's Gael teammates also competed in the 5k while junior Kirsten Stewart represented the Maroon & Gold on the women's side in the 1500-meter event.
Goose finished fourth overall and fourth in his heat to advance to Eugene, OR in two weeks. His time of 14:01.22 was less than a second out of second place and just over 10 behind the race winner. UNC Greensboro's Paul Chelimo (13:49.94), Virginia's Mark Amirault (14:00.54) and Penn State's Sam Masters (14:00.84) finished ahead of Goose.
It was Goose's second fastest time of the season, behind his NCAA qualifying time of 13:50.11 at the Payton Jordan Invitational on Apr. 28.
The 5k championship will be held on Saturday, June 8 at the University of Oregon’s Historic Hayward Field at approximately 6:23 PM and be aired live on ESPNU.
Graduate Daniel Clorley was 19th overall and ninth in his heat crossing a time of 14:22.14. His classmate Matthew Gillespie came in 22nd overall (13th in heat) with a time of 14:24.41. Both times were the No. 2 season times for the Gael harriers. Rookie Kieran Clements was 39th overall (14:41.30), finishing 18th in the second heat of the night.
Earlier in the evening, Stewart completed her season with a 15th place performance in the 1500 quarterfinal. Her time of 4:21.91 was sixth best in her heat and less than a second behind her personal best time set the day before in the preliminary round.
