LACONIA, NH - Iona College baseball rising senior Joe Torres has been selected to perform in the New England Collegiate Baseball League’s 20th All-Star Game this Sunday (Jul. 21) at the home of the Laconia Muskrats, Robbie Mills Field.
Torres was selected as a reserve outfielder for the contest. He will also be involved in the NECBL Fastest Runner competition earlier in the afternoon. Torres has appeared in all 28 games for the Muskrats and is second on the team with a .298 batting average. He is among the NECBL leaders recording a team-best 31 hits, 18 runs scored, 20 walks and 19 stolen bases and has not recorded an error. The 19 steals are a league-best total. Torres is joined on the Laconia squad by Gael classmate Eddie Macaluso who is 1-0 with a 2.29 ERA in eight appearances including two starts through the first half of the NEBCL season.
In 2011, graduates Chris Burke and Justin Wiley appeared in the NECBL All-Star Game also representing the same Laconia squad as Torres. Wiley earned the start, using seven pitches in a 1-2-3 one inning stint while Burke reached base via a walk and lined out to centerfield in his two plate appearances. Other Muskrat alumni that also have played for the Gaels include: James Beck (2011) and Thomas Kriss (2012).
The All-Star event kicks off Sunday at 1:25 pm with the Fastest Runner in the NECBL competition. Torres will compete against nine other NECBL all-star participants. The speed event is followed by the power event at 2:00 pm as the best power hitters in the NECBL take aim at Laconia’s replica Green Monster in the Home Run Derby.
