TAMPERE, FINLAND – Three members of Iona College men’s and women’s cross country and track program competed at the European Athletics U23 Championships. Recent graduate Marion Joly-Testault, rising junior Jake Byrne and sophomore Kate Avery competed at Tampere Stadium in southern Finland, a two hour drive northwest of the capital city of Helsinki. The event was held from Jul. 10-14.
Avery was the Gaels top performer at the Euro Championships. Competing for her native Great Britain, she finished third in the 5000-meter event with a time of 15:54.07. The Newton Aycliffe, England finished behind Turkey’s Gamze Bulut (15:45.03) and Azerbaijan’s Layes Abdullayeva (15:51.72) and ahead of Abdullayeva’s teammate Tsenynesh Tsenga (16:06.70).
Joly-Testualt ran for France and finished 12th in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:59.47. Russia’s Gulshat Fazlitdinova was the race winner.
Byrne finished 15th for Ireland in the 5000-meter event, crossing in 14:52.09. Norway’s Henrik Ingebrigtsen took first place in the race. The Mullingar, Ireland will serve as a co-captain for the Gaels squad this upcoming season.
