Men's Soccer Takes Second In MAAC Preseason Poll

EDISON, NJ - The Iona College men's soccer team was tabbed to finish second by the league's head coaches in the 2013 MAAC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, released today. The Gaels received 110 points in the poll, edged narrowly by conference newcomer Monmouth's 111 points.

Fairfield, with 97 points, was selected by the coaches to finish third, followed by Niagara (78), Siena (76), Quinnipiac (72), Canisius (48), Marist (46), Saint Peter’s (33), Manhattan (30) and Rider (24).

Junior back Roberto Andersson of Niagara was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year while Iona seniors Franklin Castellanos and Samuel Adjei were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.

A season ago, Castellanos appeared in all 18 games for the Gaels, scoring two goals and contributing a team high six assists. Adjei also played in 18 games last season, scoring four goals on 35 shots.

The Gaels recently completed their preseason exhibitions against No. 5 Connecticut and Temple, and begin the season Friday, Aug. 30 at UC Riverside.
