BRONX, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Fordham University Sunday afternoon. A Fordham goal in the 26th minute was the lone tally of the contest.
Early in the game, Fordham was able to pressure the Iona defense, getting off three shots in the first ten minutes. The Gaels would hold the Rams off the scoreboard until just under midway through the first half.
Fordham's Kelsey Dougherty Howard ran down the right side of the field, sending a pass to teammate Maria Lorena Canicatti. A quick cross by Canicatti found Jessica Widmann in the box for a deflection towards the left side of the goal and in.
It would be all the scoring the home Rams would need, as Iona put up just six shots in the contest, none on goal while Fordham got up 15 shots. Senior Sofia Sanchez and sophomore Kara Maguire each recorded two shots for the Gaels. Senior goalkeeper Trista Rivera recorded four saves for the Maroon & Gold.
The Gaels are back in action Friday on the road at Mount St. Mary's in Emmittsburg, MD. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
