NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College volleyball team earned its third straight victory in a four set win over Fairfield in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Hynes Center. The Gaels evened their MAAC record to 2-2 in the 25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 25-15 match win.
Junior RS Taylor Cembalisty led the Gaels with 19 kills and a .390 hitting percentage. She committed just three errors on 41 attempts while adding four digs and three blocks. Senior OH Alicja Pawelec had 13 kills and hit .357. She also posted three digs, two blocks and two aces. Junior OH Catrina Warren had her third straight double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. Seven of the 10 kills came in the Gaels' decisive wins in the third and fourth sets.
Iona's combination up the middle of junior Shannon Ward and sophomore McKenzie Humann combined for 11 kills and nine blocks. Ward had four kills, hit .333 and had a career-best seven blocks. Humann posted seven kills and two blocks.
Sophomore setter Natalie Ziskin posted 45 assists and seven digs. In the three match wins at home she averaged 12.5 assists per game.
Trailing 12-7 in the first set, the Gaels posted eight straight points with seven coming on Pawelec's serve. She recorded an ace and Ward had two solo blocks in the flurry that put Iona ahead 15-12. The Maroon & Gold extended its run to 12-2 and led 19-14 on its way to a 25-22 set win.
In the second, Fairfield took the lead for good on sophomore Hadley Orr's kill to make the score 8-7. Leading 20-17, the Stags scored the final five points in the 25-17 win.
Iona never trailed in the third set. It opened an early 12-6 lead and extended it to 21-13 on a Warren kill. The Gaels withstood a late charge and took a 2-1 lead, winning the set 25-20.
The Gaels surrendered the first point in the finale and quickly regained the lead with three straight of their own. Iona led 14-7 after a Humann kill. The team's largest lead before the final score came at 19-10 with a Pawelec kill. In the set, the Gaels converted a side out on 13-of-15 service attempts.
Fairfield's Marilyn Peizer posted a team high 16 kills. Orr added 10 kills and nine digs. Setter Caren Mata had a double-double with 35 assists and 13 digs while also adding five kills. Senior Rachel Romansky added 11 digs and eight assists and libero Bella Guanciale had 10 digs in the loss.
Iona begins a four-match road trip Wednesday night at Saint Peter's.
