NEW ROCHELLE, NY - After 86 minutes of scoreless soccer at Mazzella Field, rookie Emily Hansen's lob from 30 yards out found the back of the net to lead the Iona College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
The Gaels peppered the Peacocks' keeper Molly O'Halloran with 20 shots but it was the last one that counted. O'Halloran turned away a couple point blank opportunities and had nine saves in the contest. Iona's best chance prior to the goal came less than even minutes earlier as sophomore Alex Chinich's attempt inside six yards was turned aside by a Saint Peter's defender.
In the 87th minute, senior Sofia Sanchez played a ball inside 18-yards to junior Safi Ayinde who in turn passed the ball out to the win to Hansen. After settling her dribble, Hansen lobbed a ball towards the goal just over the out stretched hand of O'Halloran into the left corner of the net for her first collegiate tally.
Sanchez and senior Katie Higgins were responsible for eight of the Gaels 20 shots, five of the eight were on net. The Peacocks recorded six shots including five in the second half.
Senior netminder Trista Rivera recorded the shutout, her second of the season with two saves.
Iona continues its three-game home stand Saturday vs. Quinnipiac in a 1:00 pm kick off.
