NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team picked up its second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win with a come from behind 2-1 victory over Fairfield Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when Jordan Ayris got past the Iona defense and connected from 15 yards out past Iona goalkeeper Julian Petrello. Fairfield would take the 1-0 margin into the locker room.
With time winding down in the second half, Iona struck for the equalizer. After an attempt by Fairfield to get the ball out of its zone, Scarlett gathered the ball from 35 yards out and ripped a shot towards the goal that hit the cross bar and headed straight up. On the way down, the ball slipped through the arms of Fairfield netminder Matt Turner and into the goal, knotting the game at one.
With just over three minutes remaining, senior Franklin Castellanos sent a cross from the right side towards Maganto, who shook his defender, moved in and put it past Turner from four yards out for the game winner, and his team leading sixth tally of the season.
Each squad picked up nine shots in the contest, including four on goal for both teams. The Stags were able to pick up a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
For Iona, Petrello made three saves to pick up his third goal of the season. Fairfield starter Joe Martin one save in the first half, while Turner made one stop in the second half.
The Gaels looks to make it three in a row Saturday, when they face off with Siena on the road. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
