NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Senior midfielder Franklin Castellanos set a career high with five points on a goal and three assists, leading the Iona College men's soccer team to a decisive 4-1 victory over Marist Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
In the third minute of play, Castellanos found Adjei coming down the middle of the field. Adjei would then connect from 12 yards out to the right side while falling to the ground for his fourth goal of the season, giving Iona an early 1-0 lead.
In the 16th minute, the Iona defense make its biggest play of the afternoon. After the Red Foxes were awarded a penalty kick following an Iona foul, freshman goalkeeper Julian Petrello would stop the attempt from Marist's Greg Davis, preserving the 1-0 Iona advantage.
Just under seven minutes later, Maganto would find the net for the first time on the afternoon, putting away a shot from 15 yards out into the left side of the goal following a lead pass from Castellanos.
Maganto would deflect a header from inside the box in the 36th minute to push the Iona cushion to three; a margin they would keep into the half. Holzer and Castellanos helped find the junior for his sixth goal in the last four games. Of Maganto's eight goals this season, Castellanos has been credited with an assist on seven.
In the 55th minute, Adjei would repay Castellanos. Taking a pass from Holzer, Adjei found Castellanos down the left side heading towards net. Castellanos would beat the Marist keeper and put the ball in from three yards out for his fifth goal of the season.
With the Gaels firmly ahead, head coach Fernando Barboto began to showcase his bench as 23 Gaels in total found the field on the day. In the 88th minute, Marist would spoil the Iona shutout attempt as MJ Stellweg connected from 25 yards to the top of the net over the outstretched arm of freshman goalkeeper Karlo Morell, who replaced Petrello in the 58th minute.
Overall in the contest, Iona outshot the Red Foxes 14-13, including a 9-5 advantage in the first half. Petrello made three saves to pick up his sixth win of the season, while Morell made four second half stops. Marist goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski had three saves in the contest.
Iona, now 5-1 at home this season, is back at Mazzella Field Saturday when it hosts Niagara at 12:00 pm.
