POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team began its final weekend of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season action with a 3-0 victory over Marist Wednesday evening. Freshman forward Erika Flowers led the Gaels with three points on one goal and one assist in the win.
In the fifth minute, junior forward Melissa Frederick found Flowers in the middle of the box. Flowers then struck the ball towards the left side of the net, deflecting off the post and into the net for her first career tally.
In the 36th minute, Flowers would find senior midfielder Christina Tesoriero in the top of the box who one touched the ball into the left corner for her first goal of the season, pushing the Iona advantage to two.
In the 73rd minute, junior forward Safi Ayinde found senior midfielder Sofia Sanchez upfield. Sanchez would then gather and connect into the low left corner for her second goal of the season, both in the last two games.
Overall, Iona was outshot 15-6 but senior goalkeeper Trista Rivera stopped the Marist offense with six saves in net for her fifth shutout of the season.
The Gaels have their final tuneup before the 2013 MAAC Championship Saturday afternoon when they match up with Niagara on the road at 2:00 pm.
