NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's soccer senior midfielder Franklin Castellanos and senior defender Tommy Martin were named to the Capital One All-Academic District 1 First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday afternoon. It marks the first selection to the team for both players.
First‐team Academic All‐District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All‐America® Team ballot, where first‐, second‐ and third‐team All‐America honorees will be selected later this month.
Castellanos has appeared in all 16 games this season for the Gaels, leading the squad with 24 points on six goals and 12 assists. His 12 assists currently rank second overall in the nation. A native of Dover, NJ, Castellanos currently carries a 3.53 GPA in Management.
Martin has played in 14 contests this season along the Iona back end, attempting four shots for an Iona team that has picked up five shutouts this season. A native of Park City, UT, Martin carries a 3.94 GPA in International Business.
The Capital One Academic All-America® Men's Soccer Team recognizes student-athletes for both their academic and athletic performance. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
