LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - The Iona College women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Siena in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. The loss ends the Gaels season with a 7-8-4 overall record. The Maroon & Gold's third place finish in league play was the highest in 21 seasons.
Senior Nicole Paulucci put the Gaels on the board late in the first half. Paulucci one-timed a pass from junior Melissa Frederick inside the box in the 37th minute. It was her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Junior Safi Ayinde earned the second assist, finishing the year with a team-best five on the season. The Gaels controlled tempo in the first half, out shooting Siena 9-2.
The Saints gained momentum early in the second half and scored twice in less than four minutes to gain the lead. The MAAC's leading scorer Brittany Pfaff knotted the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute. Tara Sobierajski scored the go-ahead tally in the 68th minute and the Saints played it safe the rest of the way to prevent Iona scoring opportunities. Siena outshot Iona 9-1 in the final 45 minute and 11-10 for the game.
Senior Trista Rivera made two saves for the Gaels while her counterpart Taylor Booth made four saves for the Saints.
