NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College softball head coach Melissa Inouye announced the team's upcoming 2014 schedule. The Gaels are scheduled for over 50 contests in Inouye's second season at the helm of the Maroon & Gold.
The Gaels will see five non-conference foes in Central Connecticut State, Hampton, Stony Brook, Army, Hofstra who competed in the 2013 NCAA Regionals, along with defending MAAC Champion Marist.
“We are excited for the opportunity to compete in three pre-season tournaments hosted by Elon University, Hampton University and the University of South Florida," said Inouye. "We have more depth in all areas of the game and I am very excited to see our team in action.”
The season opens up at the Elon Phoenix Opening Tournament, where the Gaels will begin play on Friday, Feb. 21 with a 1:15 pm matchup against UMBC. Iona will then compete against UMBC the following afternoon (Feb. 22), beginning at 4:45 pm. On Sunday, Feb. 23, The team will take on Saint Joseph's at 11:15 am, and will conclude the tournament against Elon at 1:45 pm.
After a two week absence from play, Iona will travel to Hampton, VA for the Lady Pirate Classic. Mar. 8 will see the Gaels play a pair against Central Connecticut State at 9:00 am, and Drexel at 11:00 am. The trip concludes on Sunday, Mar. 9 as the squad matches up with St. Bonaventure at 9:00 am, and Hampton at 1:00 pm.
Iona next travels south to Clearwater, FL as they compete in the South Florida Invitational. Friday, Mar. 14 sees the Gaels play Providence at 2:15 pm, and Florida A&M at 6:45 pm. The Gaels will then take on Buffalo and Butler, beginning at 11:45 am. The tournament concludes with Iona taking on the University of Massachusetts, starting at 11:15 am.
On Tuesday, Mar. 18, the Gaels continues play in the Sunshine State with a trip to Orlando to take on Central Florida with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 pm. The spring break trip wraps up with a double header against Green Bay in Clearwater, FL on Wednesday, Mar 19, beginning at 10:00 am.
The Gaels will return to New York on Mar. 22 for two against Columbia on the road. Game one of the double header will begin at 1:00 pm.
Iona will open up a five game homestand at Rice Oval beginning on Mar. 25 against St. John's, beginning at 3:30 pm. The Gaels will play two against NCAA Tournament participant Stony Brook on Wednesday, Mar 26, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 pm. MAAC play begins on Saturday Mar. 29, as the Gaels play two against Saint Peter's, starting at 12:00 pm.
The team then travels to West Point, NY on Apr. 1 to take on Army, beginning at 4:00 pm, before they return home on Apr. 2 for a doubleheader with Sacred Heart, starting at 2:30 pm.
On Apr. 5, Iona will head north to take on MAAC rival Niagara, with game one of the doubleheader beginning at 12:00pm. The roadtrip will conclude on Apr. 6 with two games against Canisius, beginning at noon.
The squad returns to New Rochelle for a pair against Hofstra on Apr. 9, beginning at 3:00 pm. Hofstra head coach Bill Edwards is a Iona College Goal Club Hall of Famer, who spent 11 seasons as the coach of Iona's hockey program.
Iona then plays host to new MAAC foe Monmouth, with game one of a doubleheader beginning on Saturday, Apr. 12 at 12:00 pm.
Iona will hit the road for an eight game roadtrip beginning on Apr. 13. The Gaels will play two against new MAAC rival Quinnipiac, starting at 12:00 pm. Apr. 16 will see the Gaels play a doubleheader against Wagner, with game one starting at 2:00pm. Conference play will resume as Iona will play a pair against Fairfield, beginning at 1:00 pm. Last year, the Gaels split a pair at home against the Stags. The roadtrip comes to an end with Iona taking on the Manhattan on Apr. 23, starting at 3:00 pm.
The Gaels will conclude their season with nine games at Rice Oval beginning on Apr. 26. The Gaels will play host to Siena on Apr. 26, beginning at 12:00 pm. On Apri. 27, the team will take on Marist, with game one scheduled for 12:00. The Gaels will end their nonconference schedule with two against Fairleigh Dickinson (Apr. 30) starting at 2:30 pm, and one against Rutgers (May 1), slated for 4:00 pm start. The regular season concludes on May 4, as the Gaels host two against Rider, beginning at 12:00 pm.
