Softball Unable To Claim Victory In Opening Weekend

ELON, NC - The Iona College softball team (0-4) dropped its final two contests of the Phoenix Opening Tournament at Hunt Softball Park. In their first game of the day, the Gaels fell to Saint Joseph's 5-2 before suffering a 10-1 defeat at the hands of Elon.

Against the Hawks, freshman DH Kristen Turner picked up two of Iona's four hits, including a home run, and drove in both runs. Graduate OF Eileen McCann and junior OF Allison Hand recorded the other Iona base hits.

Iona got on the board in the second inning when Turner led off with her second round tripper of the season down the left field line.

The Hawks answered with two in the bottom of the frame. Sarah Yoos scored following an Iona error before Ashley Alden scored on an RBI groundout.

Saint Joseph's then put the game out of reach with two more runs in the fourth inning. Madeline Brunck delivered an RBI single before Nicole Palase drove her in with a sacrifice squeeze.

The Hawks extended their lead to four, 5-1, in the fifth inning when Kortmann single to left, driving in Alden.

The Gaels got their final run of the contest in the top of the sixth when Turner drove in freshman OF Ashlyn Morris with a single up the middle.

Junior hurler Carly Argyle (0-2) took the loss for Iona, allowing five runs, eight hits and three walks over six inning while striking out four. Saint Joseph's Liz Mendez (2-0) picked up the win while Anna Lauterbach picked up the save with a scoreless seventh.

Against the Phoenix, the Gaels were held to just two hits in the contest by the Elon pitching staff in the five inning affair.

Elon struck for five runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the second to put the Gaels in a quick and insurmountable deficit.  Iona got its lone run on the board in the third inning when sophomore 3B Sarah Schutz homered to left field for her first longball of the season.

Sophomore Jordan Courage (0-1) took the loss for Iona, allowing eight runs, seven earned, in one-plus inning of work on five hits and two walks. Freshman Sarah McMahon allowed two runs and five hits in 3.0 innings of relief. Elon's Chelsea White (4-3) got the win, allowing two hits and one run in 4.0 innings.

Iona is back in action at the Lady Pirate Classic in Hampton, VA from Mar. 8-9.
