MBB & WBB Both No. 1 Seeds For MAAC Championship
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College men’s and women’s basketball teams have both locked up the No. 1 seeds in next weekend’s 2014 MAAC Championships at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA. Tip off times for the Gaels’ quarterfinal matchups have been confirmed for both Friday and Saturday.
With its victory at Quinnipiac Thursday night, the women’s squad improved to 25-3 overall, setting a new program record for wins in a season. The Maroon & Gold earned the No. 1 seed and at least a share of the conference’s regular season championship, which will be determined Sunday at the Hynes Center against Marist. In the MAAC Quarterfinal round, the Gaels will face the winner of the still to be determined No. 8 seed vs. No. 9 seed game at 12:00 pm on Friday, March 7.
Iona’s men’s squad takes its 19-8 record to Riverdale, NY Friday night at Manhattan in a nationally televised contest on ESPN2 and complete the regular season Sunday when the host Rider on Senior Day at the Hynes Center. The Gaels also had some good news Thursday coming out of the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden as Siena topped Quinnipiac and sealed the outright regular season championship and No. 1 seed in Springfield for the Maroon & Gold. Like their counterparts, the Gaels will face the No. 8 vs. No. 9 winner in the MAAC Quarterfinal Round on Saturday, Mar. 8 on ESPN3.
Should the programs move on to Sunday’s semifinal, the women’s contest is slated for 11:00 am, while the men play at 4:30 pm. Both contests can be seen on ESPN3. The women’s championship game is Monday, Mar. 10 at 2:00 pm on ESPNU while the men’s final is at 7:00 pm on ESPN2.
The No. 1 seed also clinches a guaranteed postseason bid for both programs. Iona has clinched the MAAC’s automatic bid into the Women’s NIT and National Invitation Tournament should they be eliminated in the MAAC Tournament.
Prior to this year, there were five other occasions when the same school entered the MAAC Basketball Championships as the top seed on both the men’s and women’s side: 2007 (Marist College), 2003 (Manhattan College), 1989 (La Salle), 1988 (LaSalle) and 1982 (Saint Peter's). There have been only two instances when the same school won both the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball postseason championships in the same year: Manhattan in 2003 and Loyola in 1994.
Ticket and reception information for the 2013-14 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will be available on ICGaels.com and IonaConnection.com by Monday morning.
