NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College lacrosse team was outshot 39-11 as it fell to No. 11 Massachusetts 19-6 Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The Gaels were led by juniors Bernadette Gennaro and Casey Palmer, who each tallied two goals in the contest.
The Gaels got off to a quick start, as Gennaro put one in the back of the net 2:29 into the contest. The Minutewomen scored the next three before Gennaro tallied another to cut the lead to one, 3-2. After the Gaels allowed two goals in 33 seconds to Massachusettes, Palmer answered with one, as the deficit was to two, 5-3.
Iona remained off the scoreboard for the next 15:23, as they saw the Minutewomen score six straight before senior Nina Veneziale broke the drought with 2:30 remaining in the first half as the Gaels went into the break down 12-4.
The second half began with two quick goals by the Minutewomen, as the UMass lead grew to double digits, 14-4. Sophomore Mary Kate McCormick then netted her third goal of the season to cut the deficit to nine.
Massachusetts controlled the pace the rest of the way, finishing the contest on a 5-1 run. Palmer completed the scoring, as she tallied her second goal of the game with 3:06 remaining. Sophomore Thea Leitman stopped six shots in 25:50 of action. Senior Maria Ortiz made seven saves in 33:50 of play.
Iona continues its non-conference slate March 10, as it plays host to New Hampshire at 3:00pm.
