NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team delivered a 8-0 five inning shutout of Stony Brook Wednesday afternoon in its home opener at Rice Oval. The Maroon & Gold plated all eight runs in the second inning, with freshman IF Kristen Turner delivering the big blow, a grand slam to left center.
Iona connected for nine hits in the contest, including two apiece by Turner and junior CF Allison Hand. Seven different Gaels crossed the plate in the win.
After a scoreless first inning, the Gaels erupted for their biggest inning of the season in the second frame. Turner got things started with a ground rule double to right center. Later in the inning, freshmen Kelsey Long and Katie Newton delivered back-to-back RBI singles. With the bases loaded, freshman LF Ashlyn Morris drew a five pitch walk, scoring the third Iona run. Newton came in from third on a Stony Brook error to give the Gaels a 4-0 lead. After a walk to junior Carly Argyle loaded the bases again, Turner lifted the second pitch of the at-bat over the wall for her team best seventh home run of the year, and third in the last five games.
Following two shutout innings by Argyle in the circle, freshman Sarah McMahon kept the Seawolves off the board over the final three more frames to record her second win of the season.
The Gaels now stand at 5-13 on the season and welcome St. John's to Rice Oval Thursday afternoon for a 3:00 pm start.
