EDISON, NJ - Iona College softball junior outfielder Allison Hand and freshman infielder Kristen Turner were recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletice Conference Tuesday for their efforts last week for the Maroon & Gold. Hand earned MAAC Player of the Week honors while Turner was named Rookie of the Week.
Hand batted .800 over three games for the Gaels, collecting eight hits in 10 at bats. Hand connected on one double and two home runs over the three, while driving in five runs and scoring six times. Hand recorded an on-base percentage of .818 and a slugging percentage of 1.500 as the Gaels went 2-1. Against Stony Brook, Hand went 2-3 in an 8-0 Iona win. Hand scored once in the win over the Seawolves. Against St. John's, Hand went 2-3, with a home run and a double, scored three runs and drove in two. In the MAAC opener against Saint Peter's, Hand went 4-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Hand helped the Gaels to the 8-0 five inning win with an RBI single and a fifth inning two run homer.
Turner hit .600 (6-10) over three games for the Gaels, with three extra base hits, six runs batted in and four runs scored. Turner slugged 1.100 over the three games and recorded an on base percentage of .636. Against Stony Brook in a non-conference tilt, Turner went 2-3 with a double and a home run, drove in four runs and scored twice. The following day against St. John's, Turner went 3-4 with a run scored and a run batted. Against Saint Peter's, Turner scored a run and drove in the game ending run with a walk off double in the fifth as Iona defeated the Peacocks 8-0 in five innings.
After today's win over Saint Peter's, the Gaels are back in action Wednesday afternoon at Rice Oval when they host Sacred Heart for a non-conference matchup beginning at 3:30 pm.
