Softball Drops First Game Of Championship Round

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona College softball team suffered its first loss of the 2014 MAAC Softball Championship 1-0 to Manhattan College in the first game of the title round. The Gaels and Jaspers will face off for the third time in the championship Sunday in a one game, winner take all contest for the league's NCAA Championship berth.

The Maroon & Gold were held to just two hits in the contest, coming in the first two innings. The Jaspers got the lone run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning when Manhattan's Elena Bowman hit a one out solo home run to right field off Iona starter Jordan Courage.

Courage (7-2) allowed just the one run and five hits over six innings, taking the tough luck loss. Manhattan starter Danielle Gabriel held the Iona bats in check, striking out three in her seven innings.

Sunday's matchup will begin at 11:00 am.
