WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - The Iona College baseball team fell to Monmouth 6-0 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series finale at MU Baseball Field. The Hawks scored six unearned runs in the opening frame to defeat the Gaels.
Senior CF Joe Torres was the lone Gael to record two hits in the contest. He stands three hits shy of becoming just the fifth player in school history to record 200 hits and the second in the last three seasons. Rookie C Alex Beckett extended his hitting streak to three games with a 1-for-3 effort. Senior RF Joe Smith was also 1-for-3 and led the Gaels in batting average for the second straight week with a 5-for-13 effort in four contests. In the month of May, Smith is batting .500 (14-for-28) and has raised his season batting average more than 100 points.
Rookie RHP Bill Maier took the loss. He allowed five hits and two walks with a strikeout over 4.2 innings of work. Sophomore RHP Max Bruckner tossed the final 3.1 innings and allowed no runs, three hits and recorded a strikeout.
The Gaels complete the 2014 regular season beginning Thursday in a doubleheader with Rider at City Park.
