EUGENE, OR - Freshman Maya Rehberg and senior Matthew Gillespie represented the Iona College men's and women's outdoor track teams at the 2014 NCAA Championships Friday night at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. Rehberg was ninth overall in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase final while Gillespie finished 22nd in the men's 5,000-meter final.
Rehberg ran a personal best 9:55.73 in the 3k chase and broke her own school record with the ninth place finish. It was the first sub 10-minute time in the event in Iona history. Michigan State junior Leah O'Connor earned the individual national championship running a time of 9:36.43.
Gillespie finished 22nd in the 5k with a time of 14:30.20 to complete his Iona career. Arizona senior Lawi Lalang held off Oregon rookie Edward Cheserek by less than four-tenths of a second to earn the individual title.
Iona completes action at the national championship tomorrow evening when sophomore Kate Avery vies for the women's 5,000-meter championship at 6:20 pm ET. The event can be seen live on ESPN3 or WatchESPN.com.
