WWP Defeats Toronto In Exhibition Match, 11-5

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Despite a slow first half after an 8 a.m. start, the Iona women’s water polo team defeated the University of Toronto 11-5 in an exhibition match this morning at the Harvard Invitational.

Junior Hannah Schultz led the Gaels (0-6) with three goals, while senior co-captain Rebecca Koshy, junior Kayla Allen and junior Megan Hofer scored two goals each.  Senior co-captain Darby Nevins and junior Devika Joshi had one score apiece.  Koshy assisted on one goal.

 In goal, junior Britten Vilander made five saves on 18 Toronto shots and one assist.

On defense, Iona made four steals.  Drawing nine Toronto kickouts, Iona was ejected 11 times  with junior Karli Normand being disqualified.  The Gaels made 15 turnovers, seven by Koshy.

Neither squad managed a goal until 2:02 left in the opening period when Toronto scored to lead 1-0.  Allen tied the match at one with 28 seconds to go.

With two minutes gone in the second period, Schultz put Iona ahead 2-1 on a 6-5 advantage, but Toronto answered 18 seconds later to tie the match at two.   In the quarter’s final two minutes, two straight Gael goals by Hofer and Joshi gave Iona a 4-2 halftime lead.

Koshy upped the Iona lead to 5-2 with 2:17 gone in the third period, then Toronto pulled within two 5-3 a minute later.   Two unanswered Iona scores by Allen and Koshy in last two minutes put the Gaels up 7-3 going into the final period.

In the final period, Iona outscored Toronto 4-1.  With 33 seconds gone, the Varsity Blues scored on a man-up opportunity to narrow the Gaels lead to 7-4.   Schultz scored on a steal-breakaway followed by Hofer on Vilander’s pool-length assist with 3:32 left to go up 9-4.  Schultz’s third goal on a 6-5 goalie-out advantage and Nevin’s first score sealed the Iona 11-5 win.

The Gaels travel to New London next weekend for two matches against California Lutheran and one against host Connecticut College.
