Gary Springer ‘89
Gary Springer ’89 enters the Iona College Goal Club Hall of Fame as one of the top players in the history of the men’s basketball program.
A four-year standout for the Gaels, Springer was a three-time All-American selection in 1981, 1982, and 1983. He earned a spot on the All-Metropolitan team in each of his four seasons, while also earning three All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference accolades.
In his first season with the Gaels, Springer led all freshmen in scoring, connecting at a 19.9 points per game clip. He was named Sports Illustrated’s Player of the Week after hitting consecutive game-winning shots in overtime against Holy Cross and Wagner. Springer tallied a career-high 35 points in the Wagner win.
Springer ranks second on Iona’s all-time scoring list, tallying 1,866 points, and is third on the rebounding list, grabbing 1,021 boards- becoming one of just three Gaels in the history of the program to tally 1,000 career points during his 121 game career, leading Iona to 84 wins and three postseason appearances- two NIT and one NCAA.
He led the team in rebounding in each of his four years for the Maroon & Gold, while ranking tops in scoring as a freshman and field goal percentage as a senior. He connected on 52% of his career field goal attempts and is second all-time on Iona’s field goals made list.
