Evans Earns MAAC Pitcher Of The Week
EDISON, NJ – Sophomore Alana Evans has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career. The accolade comes on the heal of an impressive week, which included Iona softball’s first no-hitter since 2010.
Over the course of the four games, Evans threw 18 total innings, striking out 20 batters and allowing just one earned run. In conference play, Evans threw 11.2 shutout innings, earning a pair of wins in the process; she has improved her season record to 11-4.
The highlight of the week came on Saturday, Apr. 15 at Monmouth when Evans threw her first collegiate no-hitter. She went the distance while striking out a season-high 10 batters. She retired nine of the last 10 batters she faced in her dominant effort that saw the Gaels split against the Hawks.
The week began for Evans on Wednesday, Apr. 12 against St. John’s. She went six innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits and two walks. She recorded five strikeouts in the effort as the Maroon & Gold pulled out a 3-1 non-conference win.
As of Monday, Apr. 17, Iona is 7-3 in MAAC play and ranked second in the league. The Maroon & Gold have a non-conference tilt against America East foe Stony Brook at 3 PM on Tuesday, Apr. 18 before returning to MAAC play against Quinnipiac and Fairfield over the weekend.
