BUFFALO, NY - After taking the first game of the three-game set, the Iona College (17-30, 7-11 MAAC) baseball team was shut out in both games of a doubleheader, falling to Canisius (26-24, 11-7 MAAC) 3-0 and 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at The Demske Sports Complex.
Senior Justin Wiley pitched a complete game in the first game of the afternoon, but surrendered three runs on nine hits, but walked five as the Gaels could only muster five hits in the loss.
In the second game, the Golden Griffs scored all seven runs in the first three innings forcing the Iona to use five pitchers in the game. Junior Matt Marley pitched the first inning and allowed two earned runs, four total, on two hits. Freshman John Daddino threw the second inning and started the third inning before being replaced by classmate John Nargoski. Daddino allowed three runs on one hit and Nargoski pitched three scoreless innings. Freshman Steve Basile pitched the next two innings and allowed just one run followed an eighth-inning appearance by junior Thomas Kriss.
Senior Chris Burke led the team with five hits on the afternoon. The Gaels had an opportunity to score in the fourth inning of the second game when they had runners on second and third.
The Gaels will be off until next weekend when they begin a three-game set with Rider. The first game on Saturday will be played at Fordham University in the Bronx at 5 p.m.
