EDISON, NJ – The Iona College women’s soccer team was selected to finish sixth in the 2012 MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
“Based on the past few seasons for our program, I’d say our preseason ranking is probably right where we thought it might be,” said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. “That being said, it certainly doesn’t change the way we feel going into this season.”
The Gaels accumulated 45 points in the poll as did Canisius for sixth place. Conference favorite Marist College garnered 99 votes. Fairfield and Loyola came in second and third, respectively with Niagara fourth and Siena fifth. Rounding out the poll was Rider, Manhattan and Saint Peter’s.
Nichole Schiro from Loyola was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year.
Iona will begin their quest for a MAAC Championship on Friday, August 17 when they meet Fairleigh Dickinson at 4 pm from Mazzella Field.
“We have only one thing on our mind right now and that’s working hard to develop into a team that gives itself a chance to play for championship,” commented Barroqueiro. “Our girls are working hard, they’re motivated, and they are ready to leave it all out on the field. It’s definitely an exciting time to be a Gael!”
