Water Polo Falls To St. Francis In CWPA Action
The Iona College men's water polo team dropped a 14-7 decision to 20th ranked St. Francis College (NY) Wednesday evening at the St. Francis College Pool. With the game close at 7-6 with three minutes remaining in the third, the Terriers closed out the quarter with a three goal run that put the game out of reach for the Maroon & Gold.
"We played one of our better games of the season through three quarters, but St. Francis knows how to win," said head coach Brian Kelly.
"They have one of the best goalies in the nation in Igor Mladenovic and they do not make a lot of mistakes," continued Kelly. "We played smart water polo, for the most part. Our centers Tyler Mancuso and Ian Thompson had big impacts on the game drawing a combined four ejections."
Senior Cameron Hudson led the Gaels with three goals, with freshman Jake Lloyd and sophomore Matthew Stelnicki each contributing two tallies apiece. Junior Kristian Bocage recorded two assists while senior Matt Joslyn had one. Sophomores Stefen Hill and Lee Stiles set the tone on defense with Hill stopping 12 shots and Stiles picking up three steals.
The Gaels head out to the west coast next, starting Oct. 13 with a matchup against Occidental.
